Preorders began today for three major new Apple products: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPad Air. All these devices are available for order on Apple's website, but none is shipping right away.
The planned ship dates for all of these devices was October 23, but some are already backed up into November. In some cases, it depends on the configuration that you choose.
At the time of this writing, some iPhone 12 and iPad Air configurations are shipping later, but others are still listing October 23 as the ship date. On the other hand, every iPhone 12 Pro configuration we looked at promises to ship either later in October or sometime in November.
Additionally, Apple seems to have normalized the cost of the iPhone across all carriers after an initial uproar about the phone being announced at a slightly cheaper price point on AT&T and Verizon.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro mark the biggest redesign for the iPhone since the iPhone X was introduced three years ago. They have a new aesthetic, with flat edges similar to those found in the recent iPad Pro or yesteryear's iPhone 4 or 5. Every model now supports 5G networks—something you couldn't get anywhere in the iPhone lineup previously. Also, all the new iPhones have OLED screens; only the Pro models offered that last year
The iPad Air also includes a new flat-edges design. It incorporates Touch ID in the power button and features an edge-to-edge screen and the new A14 processor. Our review of the iPad Air is underway, so expect our impressions in the coming days.
There are two iPhone models that aren't shipping yet: the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. Just the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are taking preorders today. For the other two sizes, preorders begin November 6, with an expected ship date of November 13.
